2017 CrossFit Open – What Is It?

Gym in Raleigh NCIt’s March. For CrossFitters all over the world, that means it is finally time for the CrossFit Open. This is the pre-event before the annual CrossFit Games. But what is the Open all about? It’s an event we embrace at our gym in Raleigh NC, regardless of participation in the Games. Over the next few posts, we’re going to fill you in all of the information you’ll need to get a good understanding on what it’s all about. Please keep reading.

2017 Open Information | What Is It?

The CrossFit Open represents the qualifying rounds that occur before the annual CrossFit Games. If you’re an athlete with aspirations of competing against the world’s fittest athletes, you must first make it through these qualifying rounds that are being held in your region.

The Open qualifying rounds are primarily used to locate the athletes who are the most fit for each region to compete in the formal regional event. The Open also gives any and everyone a chance to compete again, regardless of their athleticism and fitness levels.

The Open is also used by local CrossFit gyms to bring their community closer together, as well as to build camaraderie among it’s members. The Open’s events can also give your personal training more purpose and meaning, and give you a new goal to shoot for as well. Furthermore, participating in the Open can also give you some great personal data on your physical performance. This data can help you figure out your weaknesses and set more realistic goals.

2017 Open Schedule

The CrossFit Open occurs over a five week period. This year, the dates range between February 23rd. through March 27th 2017. Each week is classified with a number that represents the year and the order in which they should be completed. This year, week one is 17.1. The dates for each week of the Open are as follows:

  • 17.1: Feb. 23 – 27
  • 17.2: March 2 – 6
  • 17.3: March 9 – 13
  • 17.4: March 16 – 20
  • 17.5: March 23 – 27

The actual exercise movements for each week of the Open are also announced each Thursday during the 5 week process. You can even watch these announcements, live, on the CrossFit Games website by clicking here. Good luck!
