Benefits of Supplements

When used in the correct fashion, nutritional supplements can play an important role in achieving maximum health, especially if you’re on a vegetarian diet. That being said, you should not rely solely on dietary supplements as a substitute for conventional or fortified foods as you will not be able to sustain good health this way.

Before taking nutritional supplements, please keep the following tips in mind:

  • Don’t forget about real nutrition. Since supplements are just an added source of nutrients, you should also eat dark green vegetables, oils, nuts and seeds. These foods contain magnesium, fatty acids, and many other vital vitamins and minerals.
  • Consult with a nutritional practitioner or doctor to determine which supplements are the best for your specific needs.

Potential Nutrient Deficiencies and Supplementing

Vitamin D – This is one thing that we all need more of, vegetarian or not. Vitamin D is critical for our health and well-being, yet millions of people carry a deficiency – especially during the winter months. Low levels have been associated with different types of inflammations and illness, and other more serious issues like cancer and heart disease. Sunlight is the best natural resource of vitamin D but supplements can really provide a much needed boost to your health.

Vitamin B-12 – B-12 deficiencies are well documented among vegetarians because it’s typically only found in meats. B-12 is an essential element for cellular metabolism and also helps the body make energy. If you’re on a strict vegetarian diet, this is one supplement you shouldn’t skip out on.

Omega-3 – Not all seed oil contains the necessary Omega-3’s to obtain maximum health. For instance, flax seed oil only contains omega-3’s in ALA form. Our bodies converts the ALA into EPA and DHA but yield is generally quiet low. Supplement with fish oil omega-3 instead. This type is packed with both the EPA and DHA forms, which has been proven in studies to provide the greatest health benefits. Vegetarians should supplement with 2 to 4 grams of fish oil every day for optimal results. The health benefits include lowering the risk of heart disease, reducing inflammation, and even improving cognitive function.

Iodine Salts – To prevent iodine deficiency and to ensure proper thyroid function, supplement your meals with iodized salt, certain sea-based salts, and seaweed. All are great non-red meat sources of iodine. Vegetarians are susceptible to this deficiency so supplements will help combat this and regulate your thyroid.
