CrossFit in Schools

There are a few high schools out there with CrossFit programs and classes available. The Vision Charter School in Idaho is a good example. Jason George teaches “The Principles of Fitness and CrossFit” at the school. He’s a current science teacher at Vision Charter who uses his passion for exercising to teach today’s youth.

About a year ago, George joined a box and fell in love with CrossFit. He loved it so much that he obtained his Level 1 coaching cert. This was his motivation behind the class he teaches. With the help of CrossFit corporate and a more seasoned coach from Northwest Nazarene University, they developed an age appropriate curriculum where the students receive dual credit for the year-long class through the university.

Each class starts with a short lecture then moves toward movement labs. The WOD is displayed on a big whiteboard and students try to do as many reps as they can without sustaining an injury. The students are required to workout 3 times each week and exercise times range from 7 to 38 minutes.

George said, “I am primarily a science teacher by trade, I am inclined to think that the things we pursue should leave a trail of data along the way that inform us of our progress,” and that, “The data will be the only thing that informs us if this experiment truly works. Luckily the model set forth by CrossFit is easily quantified with real numbers and real data.”

He also hopes this class with lead the students to a healthier lifestyle and possibly even competing in local CrossFit events. George concluded, “I wasn’t sure if the kids would work hard in this capacity, but they love it and the competitive side to it.”

Stress Relief and Focus

Another benefit to CrossFit in schools is that it allows for the kids to get some stress relief through physical activity. This can actually help the students focus more during school hours and concentrate on their work. This is the main reason dozens of Clark County schools in Nevada offer CrossFit.

Dustyn Van Vooren is a student that’s been into CrossFit for three years at school. He said that, “High school is the most stressful place you can go to, so it’s a great stress reliever,” and he agreed that, “a healthy body is a healthy mind.”

The teachers/coaches work with all the student to ensure proper movements for safety. Students must be able to display a working knowledge of form and correct movement before they’re allowed to participate. Van Vooren said, “You’re not very good at the start, but the coaches really work with you constantly and you get better and better.”

The Clark County school board reports that by 2017, over 50 schools will be using CrossFit.
