It’s something we all have to deal with at one time or another. That’s why we’ve been talking about it over the course of the last post and today’s piece.

Treating Your Sore Neck at Home

Heat It Up

Once you realize you have a sore neck, one of the best things you can do is to apply heat to the sore area. A heating pad, or a moist heat pack can provide almost instant relief. The heat will improve the blood flow around the affected area. This will increase your body’s natural healing abilities. Apply the heat to your sore neck for 15 minutes at a time. Make sure your heating pad or pack is not too hot. You do not want to burn yourself by accident.

Stretch It Out

The next step is to stretch out your neck. We suggest that you stretch immediately after using the heat treatment we discussed above. To stretch your neck correctly, start by pulling your head to one side using one of your hands until you feel a light stretch. Hold it for 20 seconds. Do not hold the stretch for any less time than 20 seconds or you’re just wasting your time. Also, do not over stretch your neck. Hyper-extension can create even more pain issues.

Roll It Out

If you do not have a foam roller at home, we suggest you head out and pick one up today. A foam roller can provide instant relief for lots of muscle pains. Use your roller under your spine, right below the part of your neck that hurts the most. Since most athletes already suffer from tight muscles in this area, attending to neck muscles can really ease some of this type of pain.
