Metcons are metabolic conditioning techniques that are geared towards workouts that are structured and patterned. They work around rest periods and maximize energy systems.

Because metcons increase the efficiency of energy systems, they are intense and complex. There are several benefits to these types of workouts. According to muscleandfitness.com, “Metabolic conditioning refers to conditioning exercises that are intended to increase the storage and delivery of energy for any activity. Most people think of aerobic training to be the primary catalyst when trying to improve endurance, condition the cardiovascular system or to improve the transport of blood to the working muscles. But metabolic conditioning goes a step further, conditioning the muscles to better use the fuel delivered to them by improving the efficiency for the different metabolic pathways.”
