What’s an Obstacle Course Race?

An obstacle course race, or OCR, is sometimes referred to as adventure racing. The sport consists of either one individual or a team that competes against others to complete many different physical challenges on foot, over the course of several miles. These challenges come in the form of obstacles that are meant to mentally and physically drain the competitors.

OCR’s usually combine trail and mud running with other activities that include climbing over walls, crawling under barbed wire, jumping over fire pits, submerging in frigid water, carrying heavy and awkward objects, and even climbing long ropes. These are to test the athletes’ speed, agility, strength, endurance, and pride. There are many popular races that take place each year in most major cities across America. These races vary greatly with different levels of challenge. Some require running long distances through the mud and woods, and others focus more on hardcore obstacles, while most have a decently balanced combination.

Obstacle course races and obstacle course events are also different from one another. When competing in an OCR, athletes are held to strict guidelines and suffer penalty exercises when obstacles are not completed. These are usually in the form of many burpees, making the race that much tougher.
