Things to Know Before Starting CrossFit
CrossFit is not like your standard workout plan. It’s a lot different. If you’ve been wondering about giving it try, you should probably get yourself familiar with a few things first.
Anyone can do CrossFit. You do not have to be in good shape to start. As a matter of fact, most people start doing CrossFit because they are not in any shape at all. Then all of a sudden it becomes a lifestyle. You’ll be yearning to drop by the box as much as possible.
When you’re just starting out on your CrossFit journey, they’ll be things that you might not expect. Today we are going to address a few things that you should be made aware of so that you don’t get discouraged.
First off, you’re probably not in as good a shape as you thought, at least compared to CrossFit veterans. You might have been a top high school athlete, or have been running miles every day for a year, but a CrossFit WOD is just different. It’s intense on a different level than most fitness programs. So if you drop in and you find yourself struggling, do not get discouraged! Use this as motivation to get better. You have to give yourself a chance to be patient.
You’re also not going to be good at everything we do, and we do a lot. CrossFit is all about variety. You might find yourself doing some gymnastics, rope climbing, and sprinting all in one workout. Some people can deadlift a ton of weight, but cannot run 2 miles for the life of them. Recognize your weaknesses and embrace them. Look at your weaknesses as areas that need to be improved and do it.
It’s also OK to ask questions. We encourage it. If you need clarification on an exercise, or form, then please ask. The only way you are going to get better is by learning the right way to do something. If you continue to do these exercises the wrong way, you’ll never see the gains that you’re looking for. This is why we have awesome coaches at Invoke. We want you to succeed, so do not worry about being annoying, or slowing down the class. Everyone has been in your shoes and understands what it’s like to be new.
Finally, you are what you eat. You have to start eating clean if you want to do well with CrossFit. Eating clean affects your energy levels, your recovery time, and the way you look. You can be 6 months into CrossFit and never see gains if you are eating junk everyday.
