Tips for Running Farther

Warming Up – Just like with all exercises, you need to spend a few minutes warming your body up before the run. This should include stretching, and brisk walking or light jogging before heading out. Jumping jacks and other exercises that activate different muscles groups will also help.

Run/Walk Combo – Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to run the entire distance. If you’re trying to run 5 miles and at mile number 3 you have to take a break, don’t stop or quit – just continue and walk as fast as you can until you can continue running again. This will allow you continue your workout and it will still help with your endurance levels.

The Right Pace – Run at the pace that’s right for you. Try not to start out too fast as this is one of the biggest mistakes new runners make. Starting out at too fast of a pace will make you burn out more quickly and you’ll be more likely to miss hitting your goal. Run at a conversational pace, one where you can actually talk to someone without getting out of breath.

Set Small Goals – Rome wasn’t built in a day. Take that to heart as you’re setting your running goals. If you’re new to running, your first goal should be to run a mile without stopping, then work your way up. Setting small goals allows you stay motivated to hit bigger goals. As you hit each goal, celebrate it. Make it a big deal, because it is. Each small goal puts you closer to your bigger running goals.

Change Your Route – Don’t get stuck in a rut running the same the route over and over again. New routes provide different challenges, and different scenery. It’s like exploring at a fast pace. I, for one, like adventure running and prefer to hit the natural trails. You never know what you’ll see out in the woods.

We hope these tips help you with long distance running. If you want to take your physical fitness to the next levels, below you’ll find how Invoke can help.
