Burning Calories at the Beach in the Water

Swimming – This is a strong exercise that will give you a calorie burn rate of about 410 calories per hour. Not only is swimming a great cardio workout, it exercises the entire body. The best part is that you get to stay cooled off as you exercise so it will feel easier than it actually is. For more resistance, swim against the current. Just be careful of strong undertow currents and follow the lifeguard’s warnings.

Jumping Waves – Want to feel like a kid again? Then just get in and jump some waves like you did growing up. This is a fun way to burn about 300 calories each hour. Jumping ocean waves uses all the major muscles groups of your lower body. This type of exercise will also help you build explosiveness, which is a major component of CrossFit. Use the force of the waves crashing as extra resistance.

Surfing or Body Boarding – Cowabunga dude! Get out there and shred a few waves this summer. Surfing and body boarding can burn between 200-250 calories each hour of fun. Body boarding actually uses your whole body, kind of like swimming does, and surfing will help you with cardio and balance training. Not only are both really fun, they’re also great for getting some outdoor exercise as well. To maximize your workout, try to kick and paddle as long as you can. The longer you keep your legs and arms moving, the more calories you’ll burn.

Ocean Kayaking – This one might not be for everyone, but sea kayaking can burn 350 – 450 calories an hour. You’re not going to get much of a leg workout, but you’ll feel it in your arms, back and shoulder muscles especially if you paddle long and hard.

We hope this series will motivate you to keep working out while on your beach vacation. We want you to keep pushing yourself to achieve your health goals. If you’re ready to get into the best shape of your life, keep reading to see how Invoke can help you.
