  • Steer clear of icy roads. Low temperatures can cause roads to become icy, especially when rain is involved. Either avoid roads that are icy or make sure your shoes are equipped to deal with icy conditions. There are special shoes you can purchase or accessories you can add to your shoes to make sure you can stay on the running path without slipping on the ice. You can even take a pair of running shoes and screw hex head or sheet metal screws on the bottom sole so that you will be able to grip well without sliding. We recommend using old running shoes that have at least 300 miles left on them. You can do this to new running shoes, but they won’t be useful in spring and summer temperatures.
  • If you choose to run in the dark, make sure you are wearing reflective gear that will help traffic see you better. Also be sure to wear bright colors in snowy conditions, as well.
  • Sometimes, it’s better to use a treadmill or elliptical than it is to head out for a run in cold conditions. In addition, using a treadmill or elliptical can help keep you from getting an injury during the season.
  • Make sure you take extra time to warm up. Otherwise, you might end up overheating or overdoing it. In cold conditions, it can take up to 15 minutes to get to your running temperature. Consider taking a hot shower before running. This will help raise your body temperature more quickly.
