  • Set specific goals to reach each week. This will help you stay motivated. It will also help you keep things in perspective and work towards an achievement that isn’t too overwhelming. You need to understand that you may not be able to run as much during the winter if find yourself strapped for time and daylight hours.
  • Remind yourself that setting goals and working towards them is just as beneficial as running every day or every other day. Set a specific mileage goal to hit each week and stick with it. That way, if one day is colder than another, you can run more on the warmer day and not have it affect your overall weekly mileage goal.
  • Remember how cold it can get when you’re preparing to run in the winter. Mornings and evenings can be below freezing. Avoid bundling up too much though. While running, your body temperature will cause you to overheat if you wear the wrong attire. Try dressing for weather that is 20° warmer than the actual temperature so that when you get up to speed you won’t overheat or sweat excessively. You will be a little cold upon getting started but you will get much warmer quickly. Be sure to wear a jacket you can shed and tie around your waist if you start getting too warm.
