More Fitness Basics

Core Training

Did you know that even everyday life stuff requires a strong set of core muscles? Yep, and if you’re one of the many millions of people that suffer from neck and back pain, it could be because the muscles in your abdomen, lower back and pelvis are weak. These are the core muscles. These muscles help protect and support your back and spine. Strengthening them is a key element to any fitness training program in Raleigh NC, or your area.

If you want to start incorporating core exercises into your workout routines, we suggest that you start by doing squats, sit ups, and abdominal crunches. As you advance, you can up the weight by using a kettle bell or fitness ball.

Importance of Balance

The older we get, the more important balance becomes. Our ability to keep our balance deteriorates with age. Oftentimes older adults suffer from injuries like sprains and fractures from falling down, even on flat and dry surfaces. However, anyone of any age can reap the benefits of balance training. After all, balance exercises also help to strengthen your core muscles.

If you’re looking for an easy, at-home balance training exercise, all you have to do is start by standing in front of a wall about an arm’s length away. Next, place your arms on the wall to balance yourself and lift one leg. Remove your arms from the wall and stand for as long as you can without losing your balance. Then place your arms back on the wall and switch legs.

Stretching and Flexibility

Stretching and flexibility go hand-in-hand, and both are important for staying physically fit. Some activities, like dancing or gymnastics actually require more flexibility than other ones, and someone can get injured if they attempt these without being prepared.

Daily stretching exercises are great for increasing flexibility and range of motion. This will allow you to have better posture and healthier joint movements. Stretching also can relieve stress and muscle tension. Even if you do not exercise on a regular basis, you should still consider stretching at least three times a week to maintain your flexibility.

Stretching is also great for warming up and cooling down after doing your favorite exercises. So spend at least five to ten minutes, before and after your exercises, stretching to reduce muscle soreness and injury.
