Though both exercises are great, lunges are often used to sculpt the buttock area as well as the legs. The movement is a great way to tone muscles that have been built over time.

Some may argue that squats are better. In fact, some of the most famous bodybuilders choose to use squats to get ready for competition. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger has sworn by squats.

To give you some insight into why lunges are a better option for sculpting, think of it in terms of range of motion. Lunges mimic natural movements that we do every day, including sprinting, climbing or walking up stairs, walking, running. They also help to work on the hamstrings, glutes, and quads in a more natural movement that helps to sculpt.

Lunges can also work to even out muscle imbalances that can occur when weight training. Because the motion is exactly the same for each leg, the imbalances will work themselves out while using lunges to sculpt.

If you’re looking to sculpt your leg and buttock area this summer, don’t count out the age old exercise of lunges. You can even add in squats to your routine. Just be sure to only work out these areas of the body no more than twice a week to make sure you don’t strain or fatigue the muscles!
