Healing and Dealing with Ankle Sprains

When an ankle sprain occurs, it’s going to be a lateral (inversion) or medial (eversion) sprain. To simplify, a lateral sprain is when the outside part of your ankle rolls toward the floor. These are the most common.

A medial sprain happens when the inside part of your ankle rolls downwards. These are less common because the ligaments on the inside part of your ankle are much stronger. Medial sprains are also less common because your ankle has to be subjected to a really awkward angle for this type of sprain to occur.

Ankle sprains are classified as either Grade I, II, or III; one being the least severe and three being the worst case scenario. The grade of the sprain depends on how bad the ligaments stretched, strained, or if there are any tears.

Depending on how bad the ankle sprain is will also determine the different recovery times. Below you’ll find a breakdown of how long you’ll be looking at being down before you’ll be able to fully reengage in athletic activities.

  • Grade I – 7 – 11 Days
  • Grade II – 14 Days – 6 Weeks
  • Grade III – 6 to 9 Weeks or more

One of the worst types is the high ankle sprain, or syndesmotic sprain. It’s referred to as a high ankle sprain because the injuries happen above the actual ankle. It involves spraining the syndesmotic ligaments which connect the tibia and fibula in the lower leg. Most high ankle sprains are usually Grade III and require at least 6 full weeks of recovery before athletic activities resume.
