More Tips For Healthy Holiday Eating

If you’re the cook for the holiday meal, consider opting for more health-conscious menu items. The following are still tasty but have less fat and carbs. Using various ingredients will help!

  • In pies, try using natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup instead of cane sugar. Also, opt for almond or coconut flour. These choices will still taste great. They’ll just have less processed sugar and be lower glycemic, overall. You might even choose fruits that aren’t as high in sugar, too!
  • Reduce oils and butter when possible. However, try to stick with real butter and higher quality oils like olive oil or coconut oil. These are healthier in moderation.
  • Plain Greek yogurt is a great substitution for dishes that include sour cream. Try using it in desserts, casseroles and more!
  • Use broth from the cooked turkey to make gravy and to add to dishes like green beans.

If you’re not the cook, but are helping to contribute to the meal, incorporate the ideas above into your side dishes or dessert. That way, you know at least one or two things you indulge in may be better for you than others!

As we mentioned in our previous blog, portion control is a great way to keep things light and healthy this Thanksgiving, as well. Be sure to only eat one round of food per meal. Don’t do seconds until you’ve waited at least 15 minutes after your first plate. This will help your body recognize whether or not it’s actually full. Always eat breakfast and never skip a meal in order to “save up” for the big dinner. Doing so can lead to overeating. Try sticking to only one serving of dessert, too. This is where many people get in trouble. Dessert is everyone’s favorite part, but it can quickly get out of hand when there are tons of options! Have a piece of pie, serving of cobbler, or one slice of cake. Not all three!

We hope these tips help you have a happy, healthy Thanksgiving! If you missed our previous blog, visit back to learn more!
