Will CrossFit Ever Be An Olympic Sport?

raleigh crossfit gymsWill CrossFit ever be considered to be fit for the Olympics? The answer to this question might surprise you. Even though CrossFit has a gigantic world-wide following, there are still a few things holding the sport back.

For the time being, it’s pretty safe to assume that CrossFit will not be an Olympic sport. Below you’ll find the reasons why. If you’re looking for the best Raleigh CrossFit gyms, please call CrossFit Invoke. We offer free fitness classes for anyone starting out. Call or email us to learn more!

Will CrossFit Ever Be Offered In The Olympics?

International Governing Body

Probably the biggest hurdle holding CrossFit back from competing in the Olympic Games is that the sport is governed by one man – Greg Glassman. There is no international federation. For CrossFit to take the next step in qualifying for Olympic standards, the sport would have to create a governing board. It would also need to hold annual elections to vote on and elect new board members. We doubt that will happen anytime soon.

Sport Standardization

Another major issue for the Olympics is actually one of the best qualities about CrossFit. It’s not standardized. The randomness of the sport is something that is attractive to most that compete and train in CrossFit. It’s also one of the founding principals of the sport in that you should be able to take on any challenge, at any time. When you standardize a competition, especially having the qualifying and medal rounds doing the exact same exercises, then it’s not CrossFit.

More Transparent Drug Testing

In a step in the right direction, CrossFit does have a drug testing policy. However, there are still many improvements that need to be made before applying to be an Olympic sport. Today, Olympic athlete testing is handled by the World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA. CrossFit uses a company called Drug Free Sport. One of the biggest differences between the two is that to find the list of banned drugs for Drug Free Sport, you have to be a member of their services. To find the list of banned drugs for WADA, you just have to click here. There is no secrecy here, and the list is open for all to read.

Even though CrossFit isn’t an Olympic sport, you can still take pride in crushing your WODs and competing in the open events. It’s still considered to be a sport for the best-of-the-best. If you’re are searching for a new fitness challenge, please keep reading to see how CrossFit Invoke can help!
