What You Can Do About Your Tight Hamstrings

Fitness Programs Raleigh NCWelcome back. We are here to talk more about tight hamstrings and what you can do to fix this situation. In our previous blog post we talked about how a sciatic nerve problem could be what’s causing your tight hamstrings. Either way, the following tips will help you make sure you’re doing all you can to loosen these muscles. If you are searching for the best fitness programs Raleigh NC has to offer, then please call CrossFit Invoke. We even offer free beginner classes.

Make sure you’re stretching every day. However, don’t force stretches. Doing so can cause more harm than good. Instead of forcing your stretches, just do a little. Make sure you pick a couple of stretches to do each day for your hamstrings and then repeat them without going overboard. Try to add a little each day to see what kind of results you get.

Try bending your knees when you start stretching for the day. We’ve all heard that bending your knees is not the right way to stretch. However, if you plan to loosen tight muscles that are giving you resistance, forcing them to straighten will not help.

Start your daily stretching by working on your calves, hips and back. Then, move on to your hamstrings. Focusing on other areas first will help your hamstrings to relax.

Instead of holding static stretches for 30 seconds, drop it down to 15. If 15 seconds is too much, try dropping it down another five seconds. Do whatever it takes to feel comfortable while you’re stretching your hamstrings. Remember, you don’t want to cause more damage by trying to stretch something that isn’t ready.

Once you’re done stretching, try dynamic movement immediately after. Leg swings, full range jumping, kicking drills and deep squatting will help you reinforce the range of motion you just worked on through stretching. As we all know, positive reinforcement is a great technique. This is even true for working out and exercising.

Flexibility techniques can help. Try foam rollers, medicine balls, contract-relax stretching and other stretch techniques. These will help loosen your hamstrings.
