Improving Your Clean and Jerk

What Is the Clean and Jerk?

This exercise, usually completed with a barbell, is made up of two weightlifting movements. The first being the clean, and the second being the jerk.

Performing the Clean – When performing the clean part of the movement, the CrossFitter will pick the barbell up from the floor, using a hook grip, with hands spaced just outside the legs. Lift the weight to the rack position. This should place the bar resting across your clavicles and shoulders.

Next, the weightlifter should explode to a standing position. While moving upwards, lift the bar slightly from your shoulders so you can shift your grip to a slightly wider position. You should also move your feet in a little closer together as well. This leaves you in the front rack position and will prepare you for the jerk.

Performing the Jerk – The goal of the jerk is to get the bar above your head and stabilized. Start the jerk in the front rack position. While keeping your back straight, explode by bending your knees and dipping a few inches, then push the bar up and off of your shoulders. Quickly drop underneath the bar and lift with your arms while putting your feet into the lunging position. Stabilize the bar overhead and recover from the lunge position. Finish the jerk with straight arms and legs, and drop the barbell behind you.
